The introduction of high-modulus carbon fibers has made it possible for engineers to stabilize the shaft profile — whether it be a section or the entire shaft — without increasing overall weight.
Fujikura is the latest to employ a high tensile strength carbon fiber material in its Speeder Platinum shaft that’s currently being used by Matt Kuchar, Colt Knost, Justin Hicks, Freddie Jacobson and Scott Brown.
After using a 50-ton carbon fiber in the original Speeder Evolution, the company went to a 90-ton material with Speeder Evolution II. The same 90-ton material was used for Speeder Platinum and runs the total length of the shaft.
The profile features an extremely stiff butt section, moderate mid section and a flexible tip that, according to Pat McCoy, Fujikura’s Tour rep, creates a “bullwhip effect” during the downswing.
“What separates this shaft from others is its ability to add kick speed without increasing dynamic loft,” McCoy said.
Until this year, the shaft was a Japan-only option; however, it’s now available in North America through select fitters for $550 per shaft, making it the most expensive shaft Fujikura has produced.
The high gloss look is similar to the vapor deposition used on Fujikura’s Vista Tour, but unlike the old model, the “platinum” shine on Speeder Platinum didn’t add nearly as much weight to the shaft.
